Moving Tips and Tricks

Here are our top moving tips and tricks from a professional organizer;

Do Not OverPack

When packing for a move, you will be tempted to try and fit as much as possible in small spaces, and just because you have a big box, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can add as much as possible. Moving boxes usually have a designated amount of weight, and when you exceed that, you will either destroy the box or injure yourself.

The general rule is that you shouldn’t pack more than 50 pounds when you have a small, 65 pounds for a medium box, and 70 pounds if you have a large one.

Any extra-large boxes should carry bulky clothes, linens, comforters, and cushions.

Always ensure that you wrap your Knives carefully

This is the number one moving tip and trick from a professional organizer. You must be careful with knives and sharp objects, as they can easily lead to cuts while you are unpacking. It is also dangerous to have them poking out of the packed boxes.

Ensure that you protect yourself and your loved ones by keeping sharp edges wrapped carefully with either bubble wrap or packing paper. To ensure extra protection, roll them in dish towels and secure them with a rubber band.

Always Protect your Back

Lifting heavy objects, which happens when moving, can be dangerous for your back. If you do not lift objects in the right way, you may end up with back injuries such as pinched nerves, strains, and herniated disks.

To protect against this, use your legs to squat down and then reach the box. When lifting, straighten your legs, and be sure to keep your back straightened while doing this.

The leg muscles. Use the power in your legs and lift the heavyweight items, by bending at the knees. Keep your back straight at all times and then use the strongest muscles in your body. These will work as the hoisting device.

Keep a stable base on your feet. Ensure they are shoulder-width apart and that one of your feet is slightly forward.

Remember, those personal injuries while moving can happen instantly, and it bothers me when you don’t plan for this. This is one of the top moving tips of all time.

Keep stretching During the Day and have enough sleep

When planning a move, start doing some limb and muscle exercises all day long, as these are the most susceptible to injury. Keeping your body loose through stretching exercises all day long and most notably in the morning will get you started and make you strong all day long.

If you’ve got a known problem area such as having trouble in your shoulders and knees, you should focus on those areas to protect yourself from discomfort and stress.

If you are exhausted, there will be a high likelihood of having an accident. This is why it’s recommended that you have enough sleep on the day before a big move.

All moving tips are adamant when it comes to this. You may be tempted to stay up as late as possible to make sure that you pack everything, but this will be detrimental to your health. Give yourself at least eight hours of sleep before a big move.
